Kenema was thrown into a rude shock and grief following the brutal killing of Reverend Father Augustine Amadu, a highly respected Catholic priest of the Immaculate Conception Parish. The incident, which police described as a deliberate and violent attack, occurred at his residence in the Burma III community between 2:00 and 3:00 a.m.
According to police spokesperson Sub-Inspector Brima James Musa, unidentified assailants forced their way into the priest’s compound and fatally assaulted him. The attackers fled the scene, leaving behind a community struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss of a man regarded as a beacon of peace and moral guidance.
“The motive behind the attack is still unknown. We have launched a full investigation and will keep the public informed as new details emerge,” Sub-Inspector Musa stated.
Rev. Fr. Augustine Amadu was well known for his tireless efforts in promoting social harmony and his unwavering commitment to the spiritual and moral growth of the Kenema community. Parishioners describe him as a priest who lived for others, often going beyond his traditional clerical duties to support education, advocate against crime, and counsel troubled youths. His calm demeanour, humility, and dedication to service earned him widespread respect and admiration.
The news of his killing spread quickly across Kenema, drawing an outpouring of grief from parishioners, religious leaders, and ordinary citizens. At the Immaculate Conception Parish, mourners gathered in silence, some clutching rosaries, others weeping openly as they struggled to comprehend the loss of their shepherd.
“This is a devastating blow to our church and to Kenema as a whole. Father Amadu stood for peace, truth, and moral discipline. His death is not just a loss to the Catholic community but to every Sierra Leonean who values righteousness,” said one parish elder, his voice heavy with emotion.
Community leaders have also condemned the attack, calling on security agencies to act swiftly in bringing the perpetrators to justice. Civil Society Organizations in Kenema expressed concern about rising insecurity and urged the police to intensify patrols in vulnerable neighbourhoods to restore public confidence.
In the meantime, the body of Rev. Fr. Amadu has been transferred to the Kenema Government Hospital mortuary as investigations continue. The Catholic Diocese is expected to make an official statement soon regarding funeral arrangements.
Across Sierra Leone, the news has sparked reflection on the growing threats faced by religious leaders who often stand at the forefront of community service and moral reformation. Many believe that the killing of Rev. Fr. Amadu is not only an attack on an individual but also on the values of peace and spirituality he represented.
For now, Kenema mourns a man whose voice was often lifted in prayer for his people. His absence leaves behind a void that will be difficult to fill, but his legacy of faith, service, and commitment to moral integrity will continue to inspire many.
May his soul rest in peace.
