Please Kenema people, I believe the name is KAMBUI Eagles, named after the KAMBUI Hills, like Wusum Stars, after the Wusum Mountain.
I was a sportswriter for the Daily Mail when these teams were named during the attempts to form a national league.
Kamboi was a famous hotel in Kenema , owned by a Lebanese . Did he buy the team? What caused the name change? Even if he bought the team and changed the name, I think we should revert to the original name.
As a sports writer in the late 60s to early 70s, I worked with Alhaji Demba Arch , who boosted soccer in Kenema and founded the famous Torpedo team of Kenema and later the short- lived Kenema United .
I think the name Kamboi is not the real name of the Kenema District team. Please change it to the real name, KAMBUI EAGLES, which is more symbolic and representative of the KAMBUI Hills.
I also helped to have the Bo team changed from Kakua Devils to Kakua Rangers. I thought the name Devils was not truly reflective of a town that boasts of big cathedrals, churches and mosques and had a good number of devout Christians and Muslims.
I also launched a campaign against the name of the Bonthe District team, which was then named KASSILA STARS. I thought it was not right to name the team after a cruel sea devil blamed for many sea accidents and deaths of our people. It was glorifying a wicked devil. Maada Bio (whose supporters hate me for telling the truth) and who was a kid then, does not even know about this. After our campaign, the name was dropped.
