Sierra Leonean rapper and Peace Ambassador Alhaji Amadu Bah, popularly known as King Boss LA, has made a passionate public appeal for national unity and awareness in combating the rising spread of Monkey pox (Mpox) across the country.

Speaking to the public through a press statement, King Boss LA emphasized the reality and severity of the Mpox outbreak in Sierra Leone. “Mpox is real and it is in Sierra Leone spreading widely. Be careful who you hug, kiss, and mix with. Let us try hard to contain it where it is now and stop the spread,” he warned.

The artiste, widely recognized for his influence and social activism, called on fellow entertainers and Sierra Leoneans at large to take active roles in the national effort to control the outbreak. “Join government in the fight. I call on every Sierra Leonean, especially we the entertainers, to come together and join the sensitisation on the awareness of Mpox,” King Boss LA urged.

His statement comes at a time when health officials report a concerning rise in Mpox infections, prompting the Government of Sierra Leone to implement a series of new regulations aimed at halting the spread of the disease. These measures are intended to promote public hygiene and social distancing while encouraging responsible behavior in public and private gatherings.

According to the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, the new guidelines include daily disinfection of shared spaces and commonly touched items, maintaining a minimum of one meter (3 feet) distance between individuals, avoiding overcrowded environments, and staggering services or group gatherings where possible. Furthermore, citizens are strongly advised to avoid all forms of physical contact, including handshakes and hugs.

“These regulations are not just suggestions—they are essential steps that every Sierra Leonean must follow to prevent a nationwide health crisis,” said Dr. Mariama Sesay, a public health official involved in the Mpox response team. “The virus can spread through skin-to-skin contact, shared bedding or towels, and even respiratory droplets during prolonged face-to-face interaction.”

Mpox, formerly known as Monkey pox, is a viral zoonotic disease that can be transmitted from animals to humans and among humans through close physical contact. Symptoms typically include fever, swollen lymph nodes, and a distinct rash that may spread across the body. While most cases are mild and self-limiting, the disease can pose serious risks for vulnerable populations including children, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems.

The ministry is also working closely with community leaders, healthcare providers, and media influencers to disseminate accurate information and combat misinformation surrounding the outbreak. Special outreach programs are being rolled out in schools, marketplaces, and places of worship to educate the public on signs, symptoms, and prevention of Mpox.

As part of his advocacy, King Boss LA expressed hope that the entertainment industry would leverage its wide reach and popularity to promote public health messaging. “Our voices are powerful. Let’s use our platforms to protect lives. This is not the time for silence—it’s time to act,” he stated.

With the combined efforts of government, civil society, and public figures like King Boss LA, Sierra Leone is hoping to stem the tide of infections and safeguard the well-being of its citizens.

The public is encouraged to report any suspected Mpox symptoms to the nearest health facility and to adhere strictly to all government-issued health protocols.
