Former Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, Lahai Lawrence Leema, has spoken publicly about his departure from government, revealing that although he initially “felt a little bad,” he now sees the decision as necessary due to what he described as persistent efforts by some individuals to undermine him. Speaking in an interview with Truth Media, Leema said his removal created space for clarity as the President had been subjected to constant complaints designed to paint him in a negative light.
Leema explained that while serving in government, there were people who deliberately twisted his actions and intentions, often presenting his decisions as harmful or confrontational. According to him, these individuals were able to gain access to the President and consistently reported matters in a way that misrepresented his work. He suggested that their strategy was to weaken his influence and create the impression that he was a liability rather than a committed public servant.
He noted that such internal politics made his job increasingly difficult and contributed to the unnecessary pressure placed on the administration. Leema argued that many of his contributions were overshadowed by misinformation, which, he said, triggered confusion around his role and fuelled the belief that he was a source of controversy. Despite the frustration it brought, he said the experience has strengthened his understanding of how political structures can be manipulated from within.
Leema added that once he was removed from the position, it became easier for the President and the public to see the difference between genuine governance challenges and what he described as targeted mischief by individuals with personal agendas. He stressed that his exit exposed the motives of those who were working behind the scenes to present him as problematic. Their efforts, he said, eventually became more visible when he was no longer part of the ministry.
Reflecting on his time in office, Leema explained that he always prioritized national interest and remained focused on delivering results, even when faced with hostility. He maintained that his actions were guided by loyalty to the administration and the country, insisting that many of the accusations levelled against him were fabricated to damage his credibility.
He further stated that he holds no resentment over the matter and remains committed to supporting national development in whatever capacity he can. Leema expressed gratitude to those who continued to believe in his work and encouraged his supporters to stay focused on unity, progress and responsible political engagement.
Leema concluded that his removal, though initially painful, has given him deeper insight into political dynamics and reinforced his resolve to contribute positively to Sierra Leone’s governance.
