In diplomatic efforts to bolster bilateral relations, Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama arrived in Sierra Leone on Tuesday, March 18, 2025 for an official visit aimed at deepening ties between the two West Africa nations.
President Mahama visitation to Sierra Leone focuses on enhancing trade, infrastructural development and regional collaboration between the two West Africa nations. Sierra Leone and Ghana have a long-standing history of mutual cooperation and regional development.
In his welcome statement, Sierra Leone’s President, His Excellency Julius Maada Bio expressed his heartfelt gratitude to President Mahama for visiting Sierra Leone and described him as a “brother and a great friend.”
President Bio noted that, this is the first visitation of President Mahama to Sierra Leone since he assumed power on the 7th January 2025. He congratulated President Mahama for his thunderous victory in Ghana’s presidential election held on the 7th December 2024.
In their bilateral discussions, the two leaders held extensive discussions on a wide range of developmental issues including: trade, investment, tourism, public health, education, fisheries, defense & security, agriculture & food security; and institutional collaboration.
In the midst of their discussion, President Bio stated that, “…To achieve these objectives, we agreed to revitalise the General Cooperation Agreement that was signed in 2018 between Ghana and Sierra Leone for the establishment of a permanent Joint Cooperation Commission (JCC). I have also proposed that the inaugural meeting of the JCC be held in Accra at a date to be agreed upon by our foreign ministers,” President Bio stated.
President Bio continued that Sierra Leone and Ghana have long-standing historical and political bonds. He registered his commitment to addressing shared challenges, which threatens the peace and stability among the two West Africa nations.
In his presidential remarks, Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama expressed gratitude to President Bio and the government of Sierra Leone for the warm hospitality. He added that his visit was also a personal gesture of gratitude to President Bio for attending his inauguration ceremony as the 14th President of the Republic of Ghana.
President Mahama stressed that on the importance of revitalising the Joint Cooperation Commission (JCC) between the two countries. He continued by emphasizing its potential impact it would have for the two countries. He reiterated his administration commitment to strengthening the bilateral ties with Sierra Leone and fostering greater collaboration in areas of mutual interest.
