Security authorities have arrested a man believed to be residing in the Waterloo 5-5 area of the Western Rural District following the circulation of a disturbing video that shows the violent abuse of a child.
The widely shared footage, which sparked outrage across social media platforms, shows the suspect physically assaulting the child after the minor allegedly left the house without permission. The video prompted strong reactions from members of the public, child rights activists and civil society groups, who called for swift action by the authorities.
In the footage, the child’s mother is seen present during the incident but appears unable to intervene. Sources allege that she was threatened with physical harm by the suspect, leaving her fearful and powerless to stop the abuse. The situation has raised serious concerns about the safety of the child and the wider issue of domestic violence within households.
Following the circulation of the video, law enforcement and child protection agencies moved quickly to identify the individuals involved. Sources close to the investigation confirmed that the incident triggered an immediate response from security authorities, who began efforts to locate the family and the community where the abuse occurred.
The Sierra Leone Police has since engaged the Family Support Unit FSU as part of measures to address the case. Relevant line managers and child protection officers have also been brought in to ensure that the child receives proper care and protection while investigations continue.
Officials say the involvement of the Family Support Unit highlights the seriousness with which the authorities are treating the matter, especially given the vulnerability of the victim. The unit is expected to handle both the criminal investigation and the welfare needs of the child, including possible counseling and medical support.
The arrest has reignited public debate on child protection, domestic abuse and the need for stronger community vigilance. Many citizens have expressed concern that cases of child cruelty often go unreported until they surface on social media, by which time significant harm may already have occurred.
Authorities have renewed calls for residents to promptly report any form of abuse or violence to the police or relevant institutions. They stressed that early reporting can help prevent further harm and protect vulnerable children from prolonged suffering.
Security officials also emphasized that violence against children is a serious criminal offence and warned that perpetrators will face the full weight of the law. They encouraged community leaders, parents and guardians to play an active role in safeguarding children and speaking out against abuse.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and authorities say further updates will be provided as the case develops. Meanwhile, efforts continue to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the child at the center of the case.
