In a highly anticipated move, Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr has officially announced her interest for the All People’s Congress (APC) Presidential candidacy (flagbearer) position ahead of the 2026 general elections. The announcement was made through her official WhatsApp news channel, confirming her place in the race and positioning her as a strong and vibrant contender for one of Sierra Leone’s most prestigious political roles.

With her entry, Aki-Sawyerr becomes the fourth candidate to officially declare intention to run for the APC flagbearership, though many others are still expected to join the race in the coming months.

As the current Mayor of Freetown, Sierra Leone’s capital, Aki-Sawyerr has built a reputation as a dynamic and results-driven leader, and her candidacy is expected to stir a great deal of interest within the APC and across the country. The mayor’s tenure has seen numerous initiatives aimed at improving the infrastructure, economic opportunities, and social services within Freetown, making her one of the most well-known and respected figures in the nation.

Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr’s leadership style is one that blends energy, compassion, and pragmatism, which has earned her widespread admiration both locally and nationally. Since taking office as Mayor of Freetown, she has initiated several key programs that have directly impacted the daily lives of the city’s residents. One of her most notable achievements is the significant improvement in waste management and sanitation services within Freetown. Under her leadership, the city has made great strides in tackling the waste crisis, bringing cleaner streets and public spaces to the capital. This initiative has also led to partnerships with local and international organizations, securing funds and expertise to address Freetown’s most pressing environmental challenges.

Additionally, Aki-Sawyerr’s administration has focused on enhancing public health services, urban planning, and youth empowerment. By prioritizing these areas, she has built a track record that reflects her ability to manage resources effectively and deliver results for the people of Freetown. This approach has made her a credible and capable candidate for higher office.

Her work as Mayor has also showcased her commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment. As one of the few women in a prominent leadership role in Sierra Leone, she has used her platform to advocate for women’s rights, increased representation in leadership, and support for female entrepreneurs. Her advocacy for women’s issues is expected to resonate strongly during her bid for the APC flagbearership.

Many say the mayor could bring Bright Future for the APC and Sierra Leone as a whole. Also, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr’s candidacy for the APC flagbearership comes at a time when the country is looking for fresh leadership to take it into the next decade. With the 2026 elections on the horizon, her candidacy provides voters with the opportunity to choose a leader who is not only experienced in governance but also deeply passionate about improving the lives of Sierra Leoneans.

In her announcement, Aki-Sawyerr emphasized the importance of unity within the APC, highlighting her vision for a more inclusive and prosperous Sierra Leone. Her campaign is expected to focus on sustainable development, economic growth, and creating opportunities for the youth. Moreover, her track record of transparent and effective leadership as Mayor of Freetown positions her as someone who can deliver on her promises and implement change at the national level.

While she now joins a competitive race for the APC flagbearer position, Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr’s track record, leadership qualities, and dedication to improving the lives of her people set her apart as one of the most promising candidates. As the APC prepares for what will undoubtedly be a fierce contest, her entry into the race ensures that voters will have a dynamic and forward-thinking candidate to support in the 2026 general elections.

In a party filled with potential leaders, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr stands out as a beacon of hope and progress for a better Sierra Leone.
