Alhaji Manika Kamara is a humble yet firm individual, happily married for nearly 12 years and a proud father of two.
A Distinguished Career in Journalism
Manika’s journey in the media began at AWOKO Newspaper immediately after earning his Bachelor of Arts with Honors in Mass Communication from Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone (2009).
His dedication, professionalism, and respect for all- regardless of age or status- quickly made him a household name in the Sierra Leone media landscape. His reporting on courts, parliament, and human-interest stories set new standards in journalism, particularly in court reporting, which became a reference point in media studies across academic institutions.
Manika’s credibility and journalistic integrity earned him the trust of senior colleagues reporting for international media. Notably, industry veterans such as the late Rod Mac-Johnson and Clarence Roy-Macaulay often relied on his insights for their reports.
Award-Winning Journalist
Within a decade of active journalism, Manika became synonymous with media excellence, winning numerous awards both locally and internationally. His first major recognition came in 2014 for Best Reporting on Ebola Survivors at the SLAJ Awards in Kenema. Between 2014 and 2019, he dominated the National Media Awards (SLAJ & IMC), eventually stepping back in 2020 at his peers’ request after securing four prestigious IMC awards in 2019.
His commitment to impactful reporting was further recognized in Bo District, where stakeholders honored him for his selfless coverage of Ebola cases and survivors- a contribution instrumental in raising awareness and supporting the district’s declaration of 90 days Ebola-free.
Media Representation at the Global Level
Manika’s influence extended beyond Sierra Leone when, in 2016, he became the first Sierra Leonean Fellow of the China-Africa Press Center (CAPC), an academic and media exchange program. His outstanding performance among 27 African participants paved the way for future fellows from Sierra Leone.
Between 2016 and 2018, he worked with China Daily, China’s largest English-language newspaper, further enhancing his global media experience.
Championing Women’s Empowerment & Media Development
Raised by a single mother, Manika has been a passionate advocate for women’s empowerment, a commitment inspired by his late mother, Madam Isatu Kombo Kamara (née Jalloh).
His support for gender equality dates back to 2010, when he served as a Media Consultant for SEND Foundation (now SEND Sierra Leone) through Christian Aid. His work contributed to the establishment of the Kailahun Women in Governance Network, which has since expanded nationwide, empowering thousands of women in agriculture, business, and politics.
Supporting Women in the Media
While not a founding member of Women in the Media Sierra Leone (WIMSAL), Manika has been a key supporter of its growth. Over the past decade, he has actively participated in WIMSAL AGMs, mentored female journalists in court and parliamentary reporting, and encouraged gender inclusivity in the media industry.
His support has been instrumental in WIMSAL elections and major events, including the 17th Anniversary celebration at Freetown Secondary School for Girls (2024). In 2025, he was a panelist for WIMSAL’s current project selection interviews and mentored rising journalists like Bintu Foday, whose work in gender equality has since gained international recognition.
Commitment to the Sierra Leone Reporters Union (SLRU)
Manika has played a crucial role in SLRU’s transformation despite not being a founding member.
As Financial Secretary (2015), he contributed to major initiatives, including a fundraising social evening at China House and a fellowship program for journalists. In 2016, he resigned to take up the China-Africa Press Center Fellowship.
As SLAJ Secretary General (2024), he spearheaded the revitalization of SLRU, ensuring democratic elections and fostering unity among members. His leadership played a key role in restoring credibility to SLRU, making it a model for journalist associations across the country.
A Proven Servant of SLAJ
Manika’s service to SLAJ predates his official leadership roles. As a dedicated member, he stood in solidarity with journalists, including accompanying former SLAJ President Kelvin Xander Lewis to the Criminal Investigation Department and court proceedings.
In 2019, he was elected Assistant Secretary General and was instrumental in supporting President Ahmed Sahid Nasralla’s administration, particularly in the repeal of Part V of the Public Order Act 1965, which criminalised free speech. His commitment led to his unanimous appointment as Acting Secretary General (2021) and subsequent election as Substantive Secretary General in 2022.
Under his leadership, SLAJ’s internal administration improved, fostering stronger relationship between the SLAJ President and the membership. His service has positioned him as the most decorated Secretary General in SLAJ history- a testament to his competence, professionalism, and dedication.
