The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) has in a press release dated 19 June 2023 urged vehicle owners and drivers desist from covering their vehicles’ number plates while using the road, which the ministry described as a step in the right direction. According to political pundits, the said offence had over the past five years been violated with impunity in the presence of traffic authorities.
“The use of covered number plates has far-reaching safety and security implications that authorities are not going to entertains as it is mandatory for vehicles number plate to be displayed at all times when driving” the release reads.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Internal Affairs further advised all ministers, deputies, heads of departments and agencies who use customized number plates on their vehicles to contact the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA).
Opposition political parties viewed the press release as a clever trap aimed at clamping down on opposition movement hours to the polls.
