He also urged them to place premium on their studies in order to obtain knowledge and skills and encouraged them not to swerve from their education to make their parents be satisfied rather than be disappointed in them.
Prof. Philip John Kanu thanked the Government of President Rtd. Brig. Dr Julius Maada Bio for the implementation of the Free Quality Education, which has strengthened the educational system in the country, stating that the results of this year’s West Africa Senior Secondary Education Examination “are the best” because of the implementation of The Free Quality Education.
He assured the new intakes that the Milton Margai Technical University is going to make them valuable citizens by unlocking the potentials in them which will serve as the beginning of an amazing experience.
He, however, warned them to be modest and steadfast, emphasising that failure drives one to success.
He further entreated the students to learn and discover, not to create enemies, but rather to support their colleagues and to accurately manage their time as well as prioritize their activities.
The Acting Vice-Chancellor and Principal, in continuation of his address to the new crop of students, warned them against cultism, examination malpractices, violence, drugs, intoxication, having multiple partners and other social vices and then cautioned them not to imitate people, noting that the event is a stepping stone to unlock the potentials in them and urged them to uphold high standards in their activities.
In his welcome address, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Dr Mohamed Alie Jalloh, told the new intakes that they are the lucky ones to be admitted as the first crop of students amongst the thousands that applied since the institution was transformed into a University, noting that the admission process was “unbending”, that they are the lucky ones and that they should jealously protect it.
He furthered that after the ceremony, the students would become fully-fledged university students to enjoy the quality and respect from their contemporaries in other universities as well as have a desirable prestige, hoping that the investments in them by their parents would not go in vain.
According to Dr Jalloh, the new students are going to enjoy abundant rights and privileges and then reminded them that those rights and privileges go with responsibilities.
He counselled them not to trample on the rights of others, asserting that the institution is also training them to be disciplined and be patriotic citizens for the betterment of the country.
He admonished them to study assiduously as the Administration does not condone indiscipline, violence, examination malpractice and other vice.
The Dean of the Brookfields Campus, Mrs Halima Jumu, who presided over the official oath-taking ceremony, advised the new crop of university students to adhere to the statutes of the university, reaffirming that the administration would take disciplinary action against any student who contravened the policies of the institution, adding that they must act in accordance with the rules and regulations of the institution.
