In a concerted effort to achieve inclusive digital access for all Sierra Leoneans, the Ministry of Communication, Technology, and Innovation (MoCTI), in collaboration with the National Telecommunications Authority (NaTCA), is making significant strides towards ensuring affordable and reliable mobile and internet services across the nation. This information was revealed at the Ministry of Information and Civic Education (MoICE) press conference at Miatta conference hall in Freetown
Since 2019, the partnership between MoCTI and NaTCA has led to unprecedented progress in expanding digital connectivity, with several key initiatives designed to modernize the telecommunications landscape and improve accessibility for all citizens. One of the most notable achievements includes the extensive extension of the National Fibre Backbone, which has been pivotal in enhancing mobile network coverage throughout the country. Such an initiative is expected to lay the groundwork for future expansions and increased capacity to cater to the growing demands of digital services.
Furthermore, a notable reduction in both wholesale and retail bandwidth prices has been implemented, making digital connectivity more affordable for consumers and businesses alike. Such a move is expected to stimulate usage, promote digital literacy, and empower Sierra Leoneans to leverage the internet for educational, business, and personal growth.
The drive towards enhanced connectivity continues to gain momentum, with the deployment of metro networks and the establishment of terminal points of presence across the country. Such an effort not only increases bandwidth capacity but also improves utilization rates and boosts mobile internet traffic, paving the way for a more connected society.
The strategic focus on expanding international bandwidth redundancy has also ensured that Sierra Leone remains resilient against potential outages and disruptions to internet services.
Speaking about the government’s commitment to such initiatives, a representative from MoCTI stated, ‘‘We aim to build upon the advancements of the past few years by fostering partnerships with private sector stakeholders. Together, we can tackle the challenges that remain in delivering high-quality mobile and internet services. Our goal is to ensure that every Sierra Leonean has access to the digital world.”
The partnership between MoCTI and NaTCA represents a bold step forward in bridging the digital divide within Sierra Leone. As the government continues to champion accessible technology, it is clear that concerted efforts are being made to empower citizens with the tools they need to succeed in an increasingly digital global landscape.
Looking ahead, MoCTI is committed to maintaining transparency and engaging with the public to understand their needs in the evolving telecommunications landscape, approach that not only addresses current challenges but also aligns with the government’s vision for a technologically advanced and inclusive society.
As Sierra Leoneans embrace the digital age, the efforts of MoCTI and NaTCA serve as a beacon of hope for a more connected future, where reliable and affordable mobile and internet access is a reality for all, fostering economic growth and social development in the nation.
The journey towards complete digital inclusivity has just begun, but the foundation laid in recent years holds promise for a brighter, more connected Sierra Leone.
