In a heartfelt tribute to the life and legacy of the late Dr. Kadi Sesay, the Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs, in collaboration with women-led organizations across Sierra Leone, hosted a National Symposium at the Freetown City Hall.
The event was organized to celebrate the remarkable contributions of Dr. Sesay, who passed away on 15th June 2025.
The symposium brought together high-level government officials, family members, civil society, and well-wishers including Dr. Isata Mahoi, Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs; Ms. Aminata Y. Sannoh, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry; Ms. Kenyeh Barlay, Minister of Planning and Economic Development; Ms. Isha Sesay, daughter of the late Dr. Kadi Sesay; Chernor Bah, Minister of Information and Civic Education; and Dr. Kandeh Yumkella, among other dignitaries.
In her opening remarks, Permanent Secretary Aminata Y. Sannoh expressed appreciation to all present for honouring the memory of the late Dr. Sesay.
She highlighted Dr. Sesay’s legacy of service, leadership, and unwavering commitment to national development, particularly in the fields of education, gender equality, and social justice.
“We are here to honour not only an extraordinary woman but a visionary leader who championed the rights of women and children across Sierra Leone,” she remarked.
Minister Kenyeh Barlay gave a moving tribute, recalling her personal connection to Dr. Sesay, who was the first female Minister of Planning and Economic Development in Sierra Leone. She praised Dr. Sesay’s mentorship, integrity, and strong advocacy for democracy and women’s rights.
“Today, we celebrate the life of a trailblazer whose efforts laid the foundation for many of us. She was a true icon in academia, politics, and public service,” Ms. Barlay said, also noting Dr. Sesay’s role in the implementation of the Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PRSP).
In her welcome address earlier, Minister, Dr. Isata Mahoi shared her admiration for the late Dr. Sesay, stating that she had long aspired to emulate her:
“Although I never had the privilege to meet her in person, I was deeply inspired by her presence on television. Her commitment and vision shaped the woman I strive to be today,” Dr. Mahoi shared, adding that, Sierra Leonean women would continue to honour her legacy.
The event also featured Quranic recitations by Islamic scholars, offering prayers for the late Dr. Sesay’s peaceful rest and forgiveness.
A panel discussion followed under the theme: “Women, Leadership, and Nation Building”, where various speakers reflected on Dr. Sesay’s enduring impact on women’s empowerment, academic advancement, political leadership, and national development.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Philipa Cride-Dole, President of CFN. She emphasized the importance of celebrating Dr. Sesay’s achievements.
“We are not only here to mourn but to reflect and draw inspiration from the legacy she left behind.”
