The National Grand Coalition (NGC) party has extended heartfelt congratulations to President Julius Maada Bio following his election as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The announcement came in a press release issued Monday, July 14, 2025, following the ECOWAS Heads of State Summit held in Abuja, Nigeria.
Describing the appointment as a “distinguished honour,” the NGC states it was proud to see Sierra Leone taking up such a critical leadership role in the region. The party hailed President Bio’s election as a clear endorsement of his growing influence and commitment to peace, regional cooperation, and democratic governance.
“This distinguished appointment is a testament to President Bio’s exemplary regional leadership and Sierra Leone’s increasing influence in promoting peace, security, and regional integration,” the release states.
NGC emphasized that at a time when West Africa is grappling with political instability, economic pressures, and threats to democratic norms, Sierra Leone’s leadership presents a vital opportunity for constructive diplomacy and reform. The party encouraged the President to use his new position to strengthen cooperation among ECOWAS member states and champion the principles of democracy, good governance, and human rights.
“As a party dedicated to democratic values and national development, the NGC looks forward to supporting initiatives that promote regional stability and inclusive dialogue,” the statement added.
The NGC expressed its confidence that President Bio would lead ECOWAS with integrity and vision, noting that his role as chairman could be pivotal in advancing not only Sierra Leone’s development goals but also broader regional priorities.
The party concluded by wishing President Bio a successful tenure, reaffirming its commitment to engaging constructively on matters that affect both the nation and the West African region.
