The President of the OPEC Fund, Dr Abdulhamid Alkhalifa, has pledged support for the construction of a Cancer Centre in Sierra Leone following a high level meeting with President Julius Maada Bio in Vienna, Austria.

The commitment marks a major step toward improving healthcare services in the country, particularly in the fight against cancer, which continues to pose a growing public health challenge. The proposed centre is expected to enhance early detection, treatment, and care for patients, reducing the need for costly overseas medical trips.

During the meeting, the OPEC Fund also reaffirmed its broader commitment to supporting Sierra Leone’s development across key sectors, including agriculture, energy, and economic growth. Among the major investments discussed was a 30 million dollar allocation for livestock development aimed at strengthening food production and supporting rural livelihoods.

In addition, the Fund confirmed a 50 million dollar investment for the Kambia Agro Processing Zone. The project is expected to boost agricultural value chains, create jobs, and increase export opportunities. It is seen as a vital initiative to support local farmers and improve food security.

Another major proposal under consideration is a 50 million dollar investment in the Bumbuna Hydro Project. This initiative is expected to enhance electricity generation and contribute to addressing ongoing energy challenges in the country. Improved energy supply remains critical for industrial growth and overall economic stability.

President Bio welcomed the continued partnership with the OPEC Fund, describing it as timely and impactful. He highlighted the progress made since the Vienna Roundtable held in 2024, which secured a total of 850 million dollars in investment pledges for Sierra Leone.

According to the President, about 43 percent of those pledges are already being implemented, reflecting growing confidence from international partners in the country’s development agenda. He noted that these investments are helping to drive progress in key sectors and improve the lives of citizens.

The President also used the opportunity to raise concerns about global economic pressures, including rising energy costs, food insecurity, and inflation. He stressed that such challenges continue to affect developing countries like Sierra Leone and require strong partnerships and sustained support.

The pledge to support the construction of a Cancer Centre stands out as a significant milestone in strengthening the country’s healthcare system. Access to specialized cancer care has remained limited, and the new facility is expected to bridge critical gaps in treatment and diagnosis.

Observers say the engagement between Sierra Leone and the OPEC Fund reflects a deepening relationship focused on sustainable development. The combination of investments in health, agriculture, and energy is expected to create long term benefits for the country.

As discussions continue, many Sierra Leoneans remain hopeful that these commitments will be fully realized and translate into tangible improvements in their daily lives. The government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that all projects are implemented effectively and deliver meaningful results for the people.
