Sierra Leone is facing an alarming crisis that threatens the safety, stability, and international reputation of this nation. Recent events have highlighted the growing presence of drug-related activities within our borders; and as a responsible media outlet, we demand urgent explanations and actions from the relevant authorities.
Just weeks ago, our nation was shaken by the news that Ambassador Alimamy Bangura, the Sierra Leonean diplomat to Guinea, was recalled for questioning over a serious drug scandal. Reports indicate that a vehicle belonging to the Sierra Leonean Embassy in Guinea was intercepted with illicit substances suspected to be narcotics. That revelation was disturbing, as it raises questions about the potential involvement of high-ranking officials in drug trafficking operations.
The government must provide clear, unambiguous answers regarding the findings of the investigation and ensure that those responsible are held accountable, regardless of their status or influence.
Furthermore, troubling reports suggest that a notorious international drug dealer, Joe Leijdekkers, a Dutch fugitive wanted for smuggling large quantities of cocaine into Europe, has been residing in Sierra Leone for several months. His alleged presence in our country suggests systemic weaknesses in border control, immigration oversight, and law enforcement mechanisms. How did a fugitive of such international notoriety find refuge in Sierra Leone? Who facilitated his stay? Such questions demand immediate and transparent answers.
The implications of recent events are far-reaching. Sierra Leone, once known primarily for its resilience and commitment to rebuilding after a brutal civil war, is now becoming synonymous with drug trafficking and criminal syndicates. This shift is not only detrimental to our national image but also puts the safety and future of our citizens at risk. The drug trade brings with it violence, corruption, and a deterioration of societal values, endangering the progress we have worked so hard to achieve. Our media stands firm in demanding the following actions:
Full Disclosure from the Government – The authorities must release a comprehensive report on the diplomatic vehicle drug case and clarify whether Ambassador Bangura had any involvement. If he is found guilty of negligence or complicity, appropriate legal measures must be taken.
Immediate Action Against Joe Leijdekkers – If confirmed that he is in Sierra Leone, the government must work with international law enforcement agencies to extradite him without delay. Allowing criminals of such magnitude to operate within our country tarnishes our credibility on the global stage.
Strengthening of Security and Anti-Drug Units – The government must reinforce the capacity of our law enforcement agencies to effectively combat drug trafficking, including better intelligence-sharing, stricter border controls, and harsher penalties for those caught engaging in drug-related crimes.
Public Reassurance and Community Engagement – Citizens need assurance that their safety is not being compromised. The government must engage the public and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in dialogues about the dangers of drug proliferation and ensure that efforts are made to protect communities, especially the youth, from falling victim to the influence of drug networks.
Sierra Leone cannot afford to become a haven for drug traffickers. We urge the government to act decisively, uphold the integrity of our institutions, and reaffirm its commitment to eradicating the drug menace. The people of Sierra Leone deserve transparency, security, and leadership that prioritizes their well-being over criminal interests. We will continue to hold those in power accountable until we see tangible progress in the fight against drug-related crimes in Sierra Leone.
