The Acting Director of Crime Services for the Sierra Leone Police, Commissioner Joseph Lahai has expressed his disappointment over the SLP by averring that police officers who are expected to enforce the laws to curtail the use of narcotic drugs, are themselves addicts and high abusers of these very narcotic substances.
“The most unfortunate part of the issue of drug abuse in the country is that police officers who are supposed to hunt drug abusers are the ones that are engaged in it”, he registered his dismay.
Addressing newsmen during the weekly police press briefing on Tuesday 22nd November 2022, at the police headquarters on George Street, central of Freetown, the Acting Commissioner of Police Crime Services told journalists that they have declared a zero tolerance approach on drug abusers and importers across the country.
Acting Commissioner Lahai disclosed that they have drug testing equipment from the United Nations to embark on the spot check on both civilians and police officers involve in the abuse of drugs.
He further cautioned police officers to abstain from using narcotic drugs, adding that if any policeman is found culpable she/he will be dismissed from the police force without any delay.
Acting Commissioner Joseph Lahai averred that the Inspector General of Police, William Fayia Sellu has tasked senior personnel of the force with the duty to curb the menace, adding that nothing will deter the SLP from dealing with such heinous activities.
He lamented over those police officers whom he described as fighting very hard to put into shame the good name of the police force, adding the SLP is highly recognized in the international community.
He added that these narcotic drugs are impairing the health condition of the citizenry destroying the liver and kidney of these drug abusers.
It could be recalled that the Inspector General of Police William Fayia Sellu has warned over 2,000 police recruit to refrain from drugs abuse or else will be dismissed from the police force during his to the recruits at the Hastings police training field.
