President Julius Maada Bio has commissioned the newly completed Gendema Bridge, a major transport link designed to strengthen regional connectivity between Kenema and Tonkolili Districts. The bridge officially replaces the unreliable ferry crossings that have long posed safety risks and hindered smooth travel for residents in surrounding communities.
The new structure links Simbaru, Wandor, and Gorama Mende Chiefdoms in Kenema District to Konike Sanda Chiefdom in Tonkolili, creating a more reliable route for trade, movement of people, and access to essential services. The inauguration marks an important milestone in the government’s ongoing efforts to improve national infrastructure and enhance opportunities for rural communities.
For years, farmers and traders in the region have faced challenges transporting produce due to unpredictable water levels and delays caused by ferry operations. With the completion of the Gendema Bridge, travel time is expected to reduce significantly, enabling farmers to move their goods more efficiently and reach markets that were previously difficult to access. Officials say the new route will help boost agricultural productivity and earnings for thousands of households.
During the inauguration ceremony, President Bio described the project as a symbol of progress and a clear demonstration of government commitment to improving the lives of Sierra Leoneans. He emphasised that reliable transport systems are essential for economic growth, rural development, and national food security.
The President also acknowledged the critical support provided by the World Bank, noting that the collaboration reflects a shared vision for improving Sierra Leone’s infrastructure and supporting long-term development goals. He highlighted that the bridge will not only improve transportation but also enhance access to social services, strengthen trade links, and reduce isolation for many rural communities.
Residents in the surrounding chiefdoms have welcomed the project, expressing optimism that the bridge will open new opportunities for business, education, and healthcare. Local leaders described the development as a transformative step that will benefit present and future generations.
The commissioning of the Gendema Bridge adds to a series of infrastructure projects recently undertaken to expand connectivity across the country. Government officials say further investments are planned to continue strengthening transport networks and support inclusive economic growth.
With the new bridge now in full use, communities across Kenema and Tonkolili Districts are expected to experience an immediate improvement in mobility, reaffirming the importance of infrastructure as a foundation for national development.
