The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mr. Timothy Musa Kabba, has strongly affirmed that President Julius Maada Bio is the right choice to serve as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). He made this declaration on Tuesday, 1st July 2025, during a press conference organized by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education at the Mattia Conference Hall in Freetown.
Speaking with confidence and national pride, Minister Kabba described President Bio’s election as ECOWAS Chairman as a major milestone for Sierra Leone. He emphasized that the position is not handed out arbitrarily but is earned through years of demonstrated leadership, commitment to regional stability, and proven governance.
“The ECOWAS did not make any mistake in electing His Excellency Julius Maada Bio as the Chairman,” Minister Kabba stated. “This is not something that happens overnight. It takes time, it takes commitment, and it takes trust. President Bio has all these qualities.”
According to Mr Kabba, this development marks a moment of honor not only for the President but also for Sierra Leone as a whole. He called on citizens across the country to recognize and celebrate the achievement, as it places Sierra Leone on a higher pedestal in West African and continental affairs.
“Let us celebrate this great milestone. It is a great move for the country,” Kabba said. “When our leader is trusted to lead a body like ECOWAS, it means the entire nation is being recognized.”
He highlighted that President Bio’s leadership style, diplomatic approach, and commitment to peace and democratic principles have been central to his recognition by other West African leaders. Kabba pointed to Bio’s efforts in promoting good governance, regional security, and active participation in multilateral dialogue as strong credentials for his new regional role.
President Bio’s appointment comes at a time when ECOWAS is facing complex challenges including political instability in several member states, security threats from terrorism, and economic struggles affecting the region. Minister Kabba assured that Sierra Leone, under Bio’s leadership, will contribute meaningfully to resolving these pressing issues and strengthening cooperation among member states.
The Foreign Minister also stressed that the appointment is a diplomatic victory and a testament to Sierra Leone’s growing relevance in regional and international affairs. He noted that this recognition should inspire every Sierra Leonean to remain hopeful and support the country’s efforts on the global stage.
Kabba concluded by encouraging national unity and collaboration as Sierra Leone assumes this new leadership role in ECOWAS. He noted that such opportunities must be used to deepen diplomatic ties, attract regional cooperation, and promote Sierra Leone’s interests on broader platforms.
President Julius Maada Bio now takes over the ECOWAS Chairmanship at a crucial moment for West Africa, and all eyes will be on how his leadership can shape the path forward for the region.
