Freetown, Saturday 28th December 2024– The Guild of Newspaper Editors expresses deep concern over growing threats of arrests and intimidation targeting journalists while performing their professional duties. This press release is prompted by a recent Facebook comment made by the Editor of Salone Times Newspaper and Publisher of the New Age Newspaper, in which the journalist referred to the Inspector General of Police as “arrogant.” In response, social media has been inundated with discussions suggesting a potential arrest and detention of the journalist, Thomas Dixon.

While no arrest has been made, the Guild views these threats as an attempt to stifle the liberties of journalists and a direct affront to press freedom.
The Chairman of the Guild, Donald E.A. Theo-Harding, strongly condemns any form of intimidation or threats against journalists, describing the situation as unfortunate.

“The hard-fought battle to repeal the criminal libel law was a victory for press freedom and democracy in Sierra Leone. Any attempt to suppress journalists undermines this progress,”Theo-Harding said.

The Guild calls on authorities to respect the constitutional rights of journalists and to allow them to carry out their work without fear or interference. The Guild also urges the Inspector General of Police to ensure that law enforcement personnel demonstrate professionalism in their engagement with the media.

At this critical moment, Donald Theo-Harding is appealing to journalists to remain calm and steadfast as the Guild continues to monitor the situation closely. The Guild remains committed to defending press freedom and supporting journalists in their pursuit of truth and accountability.
