A pump attendant at the S.S. Lodge Fuel Station in Makeni has been shot and killed in a late night incident that has shocked residents of the northern city and raised fresh concerns about public safety.

The victim, identified as Anthony Kargbo, was on duty at the fuel station on Monday night when he sustained fatal gunshot wounds on the premises. According to reports from the scene, Kargbo was pronounced dead immediately after the shooting, with no chance of being rushed to a medical facility.

Details surrounding the circumstances of the incident remain unclear, as authorities are yet to issue an official statement explaining how the shooting occurred or who may be responsible. However, police sources have confirmed that a full scale investigation will be launched to establish the facts and bring those behind the killing to justice.

Eyewitnesses in the area said they heard gunshots late in the night, which caused panic among nearby residents and customers. Some described a tense scene as people fled the area for safety, while others rushed to see what had happened at the popular fuel station.

The body of the deceased was later removed from the scene as police officers secured the area and began preliminary inquiries. It is not yet known whether anything was taken from the station or if the incident was linked to a robbery attempt.

Anthony Kargbo was described by colleagues and acquaintances as a hardworking and humble young man who earned his living through honest work. His death has left his family, coworkers, and the wider Makeni community in deep mourning.

Residents have called on the police to act swiftly and transparently in their investigation, noting that attacks on workers at night have become a growing concern in the city. Some community members are also urging fuel stations and other businesses that operate late hours to strengthen security measures to protect staff and customers.

As of Tuesday, the Sierra Leone Police had not released further details, but reassured the public that updates would be provided as investigations progress. Anyone with information relating to the incident has been encouraged to cooperate with law enforcement authorities.

The killing of Anthony Kargbo adds to a troubling pattern of violent incidents targeting workers and underscores the urgent need for improved security and accountability. The community now awaits answers, justice, and assurances that such a tragedy will not be repeated.
