The leadership of the Sierra Leone Water Company (SALWACO) has played host to advisors from Dalberg. The Dalberg firm is a group of global change markers that are working to build a more inclusive and sustainable world where all people, everywhere, can reach their reach their fullest potential.
The thrust of the visitation among other things was to discuss matters of access to sanitation services. Managing Director of SALWACO, Ing. George Lamin Vandi formally welcomed the team and extended thanks to SALWACO’s Director of Planning, Research and Policy for organizing the meeting. He stated that it was prudent to hear from the company.
The Dalberg firm is said to be working with the Sanitation and Hygiene fund and they also look forward to actualizing investments into sanitation and hygiene while looking forward to also engage public and private sector partnerships for more investment opportunities.
MD Vandi disclosed to the team how SALWACO is a public entity and how the Government of Sierra Leone is fully funding the Company at present. He established how SALWACO was created by an Act of Parliament with a major focus of providing portable water supply. He spoke about how there had been projects on sanitation at SALWACO, but noted that collaborating with the private sector and other partners is always of essence.
The SALWACO Team touched on how tariffs are not adequate and how there are currently working on installing prepaid metering systems on facilities.
SALWACO’s Director of Planning, Policy and Research, Saffa S. K. Bockarie gave a succinct presentation on SALWACO intervention on sanitation. He said that access for people with disabilities remains a challenge and that access to basic hygiene services including the practice of hand washing also remains a concern. He stated that there is a national sanitation coverage of 31%.
The Dalberg Team appreciated the SALWACO team and the presentation and assured to stay in touch in realizing specific company aims and aspirations.
