Senegal has declared a public holiday following a historic Africa Cup of Nations victory that saw the national team defeat hosts Morocco 1-0 in a dramatic final played on Sunday night.

President Bassirou Diomaye Faye announced the decision in recognition of the team’s achievement, describing the win as a moment of national pride and unity. The victory secured Senegal’s place at the top of African football and sparked celebrations across the country and among Senegalese communities abroad.

The final, played in the Moroccan capital Rabat, was marked by high drama and intense emotions. A disallowed goal early in the match set the tone for a tense encounter, while controversial refereeing decisions added to the pressure on both sides. At one point players from one team briefly walked off the pitch in protest, further heightening the atmosphere inside the stadium.

The decisive moment came when Senegal scored the only goal of the match, sending their supporters into raptures. Morocco were later given a chance to equalise from the penalty spot, but the effort was saved, preserving Senegal’s narrow lead and sealing the win after a nerve wracking finish.

As the final whistle blew, scenes of jubilation erupted both inside the stadium and back home in Senegal. In the capital Dakar, thousands of fans gathered around large outdoor screens, including at the foot of the iconic African Renaissance Monument, to watch the historic clash unfold.

Throughout the match, supporters cheered sang and waved national flags as emotions swung from hope to anxiety. For some fans, the tension proved overwhelming, with a few stepping away from the screens during key moments of the game, unable to watch as the drama intensified.

Following the victory, celebrations spilled into the streets of Dakar and other cities, with horns blaring, drums beating and crowds dancing late into the night. Many fans praised the team’s resilience and discipline in overcoming a determined Moroccan side on home soil.

The government said the public holiday would allow citizens to fully celebrate the achievement and honour the players and coaching staff for their dedication. Officials also highlighted the role of sport in bringing people together and strengthening national identity.

Senegal’s triumph is expected to be marked by an official for the team upon their return, with further celebrations planned in the coming days. The win not only crowns Senegal as champions of Africa but also writes a memorable chapter in the nation’s sporting history, uniting the country in joy and pride.
