The 6th World Media Summit (WMS) opened its doors in the picturesque city of Urumqi, Xinjiang Uyqur Autonomous Region in northwestern China, in a momentous gathering of over 500 media managers, chief executives of the world’s top media houses, government agencies, international organizations, and other institutions from 106 countries and regions. The summit, which unfolded from October 12 to 17, 2024, served as a global platform for leaders in journalism and technology to converge under the theme “Artificial Intelligence and Media Transformation,” reflecting the evolving landscape of media in the digital age.

Jointly organized by the esteemed Xinhua News Agency and the People’s Government of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, this year’s summit set the stage for robust discussions, knowledge sharing, and networking opportunities aimed at exploring the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and media innovation. Among the distinguished attendees was Senior Sierra Leonean journalist Abu Bakarr Kargbo, fondly known as Fadda Bakish, along with representatives from 208 media outlets, government bodies, and high-tech enterprises across the globe, highlighting the summit’s truly international scope and significance.

Fu Hua, President of Xinhua News Agency and a key figure behind the summit’s organization, underscored the pivotal role of AI in revolutionizing content creation and dissemination within the media industry, citing a substantial 70% enhancement in efficiency facilitated by technological innovations. In his address during the opening ceremony, Fu emphasized the importance of viewing AI as a tool for empowerment rather than a substitute for human creativity, stressing the irreplaceable role of individuals in news reporting and content generation.

Recognizing the transformative potential of AI in media, the summit provided a forum for in-depth conversations on the opportunities and challenges posed by modern technology. A comprehensive report unveiled during the opening day shed light on the industry’s evolving landscape, revealing that a significant majority of surveyed media professionals viewed AI positively and had begun integrating the technology into their workflows. However, concerns regarding the regulation of generative AI were raised, with a notable 85.6% of journalists advocating for stricter governance mechanisms to ensure ethical and transparent use of AI tools.

Amidst vibrant discussions and knowledge-sharing sessions, showcases of cutting-edge AI technologies developed by Xinhua News Agency dazzled attendees, offering a glimpse into the future of media innovation. A dedicated plenary session on the development of journalism in the digital age further enriched the dialogue, providing insights into emerging trends and best practices shaping the media industry’s trajectory on a global scale.

Since its inception in 2009, the World Media Summit has emerged as a premier platform for fostering international collaboration and coordination among media entities worldwide, bridging geographical boundaries and facilitating mutual learning. Building on the success of the 5th WMS held in China’s Guangdong and Yunnan Provinces in December 2023, the momentum and enthusiasm surrounding the summit have only grown, with participants expressing a keen desire for more opportunities to convene and exchange ideas in China.

Against the backdrop of Xinjiang’s rich cultural heritage and diverse landscapes, delegates to the 6th WMS were not only immersed in enlightening discussions but also offered unique opportunities to explore the region’s storied Silk Road history, engage with local communities, and experience firsthand the vibrant multi-ethnic tapestry that defines Xinjiang’s identity. This blend of cultural immersion and intellectual exchange underscored the summit’s commitment to fostering cross-cultural understanding and collaboration among global media stakeholders.

As artificial intelligence continues to permeate every facet of the media industry, embodying both unprecedented opportunities and challenges, the World Media Summit stands at the vanguard of championing innovation, ethical practices, and human-centric approaches in journalism. With a resounding call for collaboration, dialogue, and shared progress, the 6th WMS in Urumqi, Xinjiang exemplified the enduring spirit of journalistic excellence and technological advancement shaping the future of media on a global scale.
