Sierra Leone’s senior women’s national football team, the Sierra Queens, delivered an impressive comeback performance at the ongoing WAFU Zone A Women’s Championship in Mauritius, defeating Guinea 3-1. The win comes just days after a disappointing 3-0 loss to The Gambia in their tournament opener.
Determined to revive their campaign and restore national pride, the Queens entered the match against Guinea with renewed energy and focus. Their resilience paid off as they dominated large portions of the game, capitalizing on scoring opportunities and showing solid teamwork across the pitch.
The win not only marks their first in the regional competition but also significantly boosts their chances of advancing from the group stage. For fans and supporters back home in Sierra Leone, the victory is a much-needed morale booster.
“This is the kind of response we wanted from the team after the Gambia match,” said a Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) official following the game. “The girls showed character, discipline, and fighting spirit. They gave Sierra Leoneans something to be proud of.”
The match saw Sierra Leone open the scoring early in the first half, setting the tone for a competitive and attacking display. Despite Guinea’s efforts to fight back, the Queens maintained control and continued to apply pressure, eventually sealing the result with two more goals.
Guinea managed to pull one back late in the game, but it was not enough to change the outcome, as the Queens remained defensively composed and focused until the final whistle.
Key players in the victory included the team’s forward line, who capitalized on defensive lapses from Guinea, as well as the midfielders who controlled the tempo of the game. The defense also bounced back strongly after the setback against Gambia, showing better organization and discipline.
The Coach praised the players for their determination and commitment, noting that the performance was a reflection of their potential. “We went back, corrected our mistakes, and came into this game with a different mindset,” he said. “It was a team effort, and the girls executed the game plan very well.”
The Sierra Queens are now back in contention in the WAFU Zone A tournament and will look to build on this momentum in their next match. With improved confidence and support from fans, they aim to continue pushing for a strong finish in the competition.
As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on the Queens to see whether they can sustain their form and possibly reach the knockout stages — a goal that seemed distant just a few days ago but now feels within reach.
