Banjul, The Gambia – The Sierra Leone High Commission in The Gambia has launched a renewed round of community engagements aimed at strengthening ties with Sierra Leoneans residing in the country, including traders in Brusubi.
Her Excellency Martha C. Kanagbo, Sierra Leone’s High Commissioner to The Gambia, together with her staff, reaffirmed the Mission’s commitment to advocating for women and safeguarding the rights and welfare of Sierra Leoneans abroad.
In her address, the High Commissioner encouraged young people to remain united and represent Sierra Leone with integrity, reminding them that The Gambia is their host nation and that certain behaviors are unacceptable.
She also cautioned against involvement in illicit activities such as drug trafficking, rape, and murder, stressing that such acts damage Sierra Leone’s reputation.
Madam Kadijatu Eunice Alpha, Head of Chancery, urged compliance with Gambian laws and resilience in the face of challenges.
She assured the community that, the Mission is actively engaging Gambian authorities to secure a conducive trading environment for Sierra Leonean traders.
She also noted that repatriation support, through Red Cross funding, may be available for those wishing to return home or seeking medical care.
The High Commissioner advised Sierra Leoneans to channel grievances and challenges through the Embassy rather than taking matters into their own hands. She further cautioned them against participation in Gambian politics, noting that upholding Sierra Leone’s dignity requires political neutrality in their host country.
Madam Alpha also urged Community members to refrain from drug abuse, particularly the use of Kush, which continues to harm lives and tarnish the country’s image abroad.
The High Commissioner emphasized the importance of registration with the Mission, to ensure that, Sierra Leoneans can proactively access support rather than seeking help only during times of crisis.
Mahwa Alieu, Information Attaché, also encouraged Sierra Leoneans to uphold honesty, dignity, and respect while living in The Gambia.
She highlighted recent incidents involving drugs, verbal abuse, and fighting, stressing the importance of transparency and peaceful conflict resolution within the community.
Through these engagements, the Sierra Leone High Commission continues to strengthen its partnership with Sierra Leoneans in The Gambia, while reinforcing the values of dignity, unity, and lawful conduct.
