The Sierra Leone Association of Non-Governmental Organizations SLANGO has held its Annual General Meeting in Makeni on January 21, 2026, bringing together members, government officials and development partners to reflect on progress and strengthen the future of the NGO sector. A major highlight of the meeting was the official launch of SLANGO’s new online portal, aimed at improving efficiency, transparency and accountability across the sector.
The AGM was held under the theme “From Survival to Sustainability,” emphasizing the need for strong institutions, responsible governance and long term impact. The event attracted key authorities from Bombali District, including the Paramount Chief of Makarie Chiefdom, representatives of the Bombali District Council and the Mayor of Makeni City Council. District leaders commended NGOs for their contributions to community development and encouraged greater local ownership of development programs.
During the meeting, board members reviewed and approved key governance and financial documents, including the Chairman’s report, the Secretariat report, the 2024 audit report and the Board Treasurer’s report, as well as the proposed 2026 and 2027 budget. These deliberations reinforced SLANGO’s commitment to transparency and collective decision making.
Speaking on regulatory issues, Eric Masally, Director of NGO Affairs at the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development MOPED, reminded NGOs of the mandatory compliance revision for the 2026 and 2027 period. He also informed members about the upcoming NGO Week scheduled for February 21 to 27, urging organizations to actively participate.
In his keynote address, Ambrose James, Development Secretary at MOPED, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting NGOs and civil society organizations through improved coordination. He praised SLANGO for launching the online portal, noting that the platform will reduce operational costs, improve efficiency and enhance accountability. He urged NGOs to embrace sustainability planning, program localization, revised funding models and stronger private sector collaboration.
SLANGO Board Chair, Mr Christian Martyn Kamara, described the launch of the online portal as a turning point for the association. He said the platform will streamline NGO registration, reporting and communication, making it easier for members to comply with regulations and engage with SLANGO. According to him, the portal reflects SLANGO’s vision of a modern, transparent and member focused institution.
ActionAid Sierra Leone Executive Director and SLANGO Board Member, Foday Bassie Swaray, said the AGM demonstrated SLANGO’s dedication to openness and accountability. He noted that inclusive dialogue and shared decision making are essential for building a strong and credible NGO sector.
The AGM concluded with a call for unity and cooperation among NGOs, government and partners, with participants agreeing that the new online portal will play a key role in strengthening coordination and supporting sustainable development across Sierra Leone.
