The Executive Committee of the Sierra Leone Football Association has appointed Mohamed Benson Bawoh as General Secretary and Ishmail Saidu Kanu Esq as Deputy General Secretary, bringing an end to months of speculation surrounding the Association’s top administrative positions.
The appointments were announced in an official press release dated Tuesday February 3 2026, following a meeting of the SLFA Executive Committee. Both appointments take immediate effect and are aimed at strengthening the Association’s administrative framework and improving football governance across the country.
Mohamed Benson Bawoh’s appointment formalises a role he has effectively been performing for several months. He has been acting as General Secretary since former office holder Chris Kamara proceeded on leave and did not return to active duty. During that period, Bawoh oversaw the day to day operations of the Association, working closely with the Executive Committee and key stakeholders in domestic football.
His confirmation is widely seen as a move that provides stability and continuity within the SLFA administration. Sources within the football community say Bawoh’s experience and familiarity with the internal workings of the Association played a major role in the Executive Committee’s decision. The SLFA noted that his professionalism and leadership qualities are expected to support the Association’s strategic objectives and ongoing football development programmes.
The appointment of Ishmail Saidu Kanu Esq as Deputy General Secretary is also viewed as a strategic step. Kanu is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the SLFA administration, particularly in areas related to governance systems and institutional reforms. His legal background is anticipated to add value to policy formulation, compliance, and administrative processes within the Association.
In its statement, the SLFA Executive Committee expressed confidence in both appointees, stressing that their combined expertise will help enhance efficiency and transparency within the football governing body. The Association reiterated its commitment to building strong administrative structures that can effectively support football development at all levels.
The announcement brings to a close months of uncertainty, debates, and public speculation over who would permanently occupy the General Secretary position. The delay had fueled arguments and guesses within football circles, with many calling for clarity to allow the Association to focus fully on its core mandate of developing the game.
Observers believe the new appointments could mark a turning point for the SLFA as it continues efforts to reform its administration and improve relations with clubs, regional associations, and other stakeholders. With several domestic competitions ongoing and others in the pipeline, a stable and functional secretariat is seen as critical to smooth operations.
The SLFA concluded its press release by wishing both Mohamed Benson Bawoh and Ishmail Saidu Kanu success as they assume their new roles in service of football development in Sierra Leone. Football stakeholders across the country will be watching closely to see how the new leadership team shapes the future direction of the Association in the months ahead.
