The President of the Sierra Leone Football Association SLFA Babadi Kamara has officially launched the Wusum Stadium fence project in Makeni committing more than forty thousand United States dollars to improve the facility and enhance football development in the region.

The project which marks a major step in the rehabilitation of one of the country’s historic football venues includes the construction of a perimeter fence around the stadium as well as upgrades to dressing rooms and sanitation facilities. In addition to the initial investment President Kamara has approved an extra twenty thousand United States dollars to support the drilling of a borehole and the construction of modern toilet facilities to improve hygiene and access to clean water.

Speaking at the launch ceremony President Kamara said the initiative reflects his administration’s commitment to integrity transparency and sustainable football development across Sierra Leone. He noted that improving infrastructure is critical to the growth of the game and the welfare of players officials and fans.

According to him Wusum Stadium holds an important place in the country’s football history and deserves to meet acceptable standards for hosting matches and other sporting activities. He emphasized that football development must go beyond competitions to include facilities that support talent development and community engagement.

President Kamara further revealed that the Makeni project is part of a broader national plan to upgrade football infrastructure across the country. He disclosed that similar projects will be rolled out in other regions to ensure equitable development and access to quality facilities.

He added that more comprehensive upgrades are planned ahead of 2027 with support expected from FIFA through its development programs. These future improvements he said will focus on enhancing safety player welfare and overall stadium standards in line with international best practices.

Local football stakeholders’ community leaders and sports enthusiasts welcomed the initiative describing it as timely and transformative. They expressed optimism that the improvements will boost football activities in Makeni and provide a better environment for young talents to develop their skills.

The launch of the Wusum Stadium fence project comes at a time when calls for improved sports infrastructure have grown louder across the country. With the SLFA leadership signaling strong commitment and investment many observers believe the project could serve as a model for future developments in Sierra Leone football.

As work begins on the project expectations are high that the upgraded facility will not only restore the pride of Makeni football fans but also contribute meaningfully to the long term growth of the game nationwide.
