The National Chairman of the Sierra Leone People’s Party, Sir Jimmy Batilo Songa, on Tuesday received the Chinese Ambassador during a courtesy visit aimed at strengthening relations between the Communist Party of China and the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party.
The meeting, which took place in Freetown, focused on expanding cooperation between the two political parties and exploring opportunities for leadership development and technical support for party officials across the country.
Speaking during the engagement, Sir Jimmy Batilo Songa warmly welcomed the Chinese delegation and expressed appreciation to the Government of the People’s Republic of China for its continued partnership with Sierra Leone and the ruling party.
He recalled China’s support in 2019 when a fifteen member delegation from the SLPP participated in a leadership training programme at the Communist Party of China Leadership Academy.
“On behalf of the party, I warmly welcome the Chinese delegation and express our sincere appreciation to the Government of the People’s Republic of China for inviting a fifteen member delegation from the SLPP to the CPC Leadership Academy in 2019,” Songa said.
According to him, the training programme provided valuable knowledge and exposure for members of the delegation and helped strengthen leadership capacity within the party.
During the meeting, Songa urged the Chinese Ambassador to consider providing additional leadership training opportunities and technical assistance that would benefit party executives nationwide.
He noted that strengthening the skills and knowledge of party leaders remains a priority for the SLPP as it continues to play its role in national governance and development.
Songa emphasized that building leadership capacity will not only enhance the internal operations of the party but also contribute to effective governance and service delivery across the country.
The Chinese Ambassador, in response, reaffirmed China’s commitment to maintaining strong ties with Sierra Leone and its ruling party.
He assured the SLPP leadership of China’s continued willingness to collaborate with the government under the leadership of President Julius Maada Bio in promoting development and addressing key challenges facing the country.
The Ambassador also highlighted China’s ongoing support for development initiatives in Sierra Leone, particularly in areas such as infrastructure and economic cooperation.
According to him, China remains committed to working with Sierra Leone to help improve livelihoods and reduce poverty through various development partnerships.
He further assured the SLPP Chairman that the request for additional leadership training and technical support would receive positive consideration.
The meeting ended with both sides expressing optimism about strengthening cooperation between the two political parties and deepening the broader bilateral relationship between Sierra Leone and China.
Observers say such engagements reflect the growing diplomatic and political ties between the two countries as they continue to collaborate on development and governance initiatives.
