The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) held a pivotal meeting recently, setting the stage for a series of lower-level elections and solidifying its commitment to party unity and transformation. The session, presided over by the National Secretary General, Umaru Koroma Esq., marked a significant step toward strengthening the party’s foundation ahead of the critical years of 2025 and 2026.
The meeting opened with remarks from the National Chairman, who highlighted the importance of focused and deliberate action in fostering internal cohesion and driving national progress.
His words set a constructive tone for the day, paving the way for the Deputy National Leader, Vice President Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, to deliver an inspiring address.
The Vice President’s speech struck a chord with attendees as he underscored the importance of unity, fairness, and inclusivity within the SLPP.
He expressed optimism for the future, stating that 2025 and 2026 would be transformative years under the leadership of President Julius Maada Bio.
He emphasized the need for strategies that align with the party’s vision for sustainable progress, urging members to rally behind the leadership.
‘‘Unity and fairness are the cornerstones of our strength,’’ the Vice President remarked. ‘‘By conducting free and fair elections, we can build a party that genuinely represents the will of our people. Our transformation begins with electing leaders who embody the aspirations of our grassroots.’’
In his commitment to inclusivity, he announced plans to engage appointees at all levels, ensuring that SLPP members, from the regional offices to the grassroots zones, receive the support necessary for active participation. His message resonated with the audience, reaffirming the party’s dedication to creating a robust and united front.
One of the most critical outcomes of the meeting was the adoption of a comprehensive timetable for the party’s lower-level and national elections. The roadmap includes:
- 18th January 2025: NEC to finalize guidelines, dates, and venues for the Women’s and Young Generation Conferences.
- 8th February 2025: Sectional and zonal elections to be held nationwide.
- 15th February 2025: Chiefdom elections to take place across the country.
- 22nd February 2025: Constituency executive elections and all Students Chapter Elections.
- 1st March 2025: District executive elections.
- 8th March 2025: Regional executive elections.
- 15th March 2025: National Young Generation Conference and elections, proposed to be held in Bo City.
- 22nd March 2025: National Women’s Council elections, with Pujehun as the proposed venue.
- 19th April 2025: NEC meeting to validate elected delegates and publish the delegate list, in line with a Supreme Court ruling.
- 23rd, 24th May 2025: National Delegates’ Conference to elect remaining National Executive members, including national positions, with Kenema City as the proposed venue.
The timetable was met with widespread approval, with members acknowledging the detailed and transparent process as a step toward achieving unity and inclusivity.
The Vice President reiterated the importance of grassroots’ engagement as a critical component of the SLPP’s success. He called for collective efforts to bridge gaps between appointees and grassroots members, emphasizing that no one should feel excluded from the party’s activities. ‘‘The grassroots is the heart of the SLPP,’’ he noted. ‘‘By working together, we can transform our nation and ensure that everyone feels seen and heard.’’
As the meeting concluded, there was a palpable sense of determination among attendees. The SLPP NEC demonstrated its resolve to foster party unity and leadership at all levels. With a clear roadmap and a shared vision, the party is poised to build on its legacy while addressing challenges with renewed vigour.
