Information reaching the press has it that the incumbent Sierra the Leone People’s Party (SLPP) remains committed to continue with their political tricks aimed at discouraging the elected Mayor of the Freetown City Council (FCC), Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, from accomplishing her planned developmental agenda for the progress and development of the municipality.

According to sources within SLPP quarters the ruling party’s decision to appoint the badly defeated Mohamed Gento Kamara as the Minister of Western Area continues is geared towards taking legitimate roles and responsibilities from the mayor of Freetown.

According to source, the decision seems deliberate, with Mohamed Gento Kamara as would be Minister of Western Area, all national and international fundings meant for the implementation of project under the FCC will be diverted to the Ministry of Western Area.

The deliberate deprival of the Mayor of the FCC findings however has it that limited her chances and operations to deliver on most of her campaign promises during her first tenure as mayor.

Wishes and aspiration of many APC party members in the capital and its environs want Mayor Akie Sawyer not to directly work with the SLPP led government.

According to them, the government of President Bio through the Ministry of Internal Affairs had subjected the Freetown Mayor to intimidations and deprived the FCC of fundings for the implementation of Transform Freetown Project and others that would have transformed the city.

It could be recalled that the Chief Electoral Commissioner and National Returning Officer, Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone, Mohamed K. Konneh last 1 July 2023 officially announced and declared Yvonne Aki-Sawyer as winner of the mayoral election by securing 51.36% against her SLPP opponent, Mohamed Gento Kamara.
