In an important address at the Consultative Meeting held by the National Sports Authority (NSA) at the View Hotel conference room, at the Freetown City Council Hall, Minister of Sports, Augusta James-Teima talked about the importance of anti-doping measures in sports. She observed that sport is not merely an activity but a disciplined pursuit that requires understanding and commitment. She spoke of the significance of the National Sports Authority Act’s provisions regarding anti-doping, which according to her is pivotal in maintaining fairness and integrity in sports.
“Doping undermines the essence of sportsmanship and fair competition,” she said and defined doping as the use of prohibited substances to enhance athletic performance.
The Sports Minister urged attendees to prioritize the consultation, emphasizing the necessity for all sports stakeholders to be well-versed in anti-doping regulations.
“The welfare of our athletes is paramount. We must ensure equity, fair play, and uphold global standards,” she James-Teima continued, encouraging urging vigilance against doping practices that could jeopardize not only individual careers but also tarnish national and international reputations.
She cautioned all of severe consequences for offenders, including bans, suspensions, and reputational damage, saying that doping constitutes a criminal offense under both national and international laws. “Athletes must serve as role models, not liabilities.” She called for collective efforts to eradicate doping from Sierra Leone sports.
Sports Minister Augusta James-Teima called on sports organizations to meticulously understand and implement the anti-doping regulation within their respective associations. “Let us commit to reducing and eventually eliminating doping in our sports for the integrity and future of our athletes,” warned.
