In a remarkable show of sportsmanship and youth development, NP (SL) Limited, in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Squash Association, successfully hosted the 2025 Inter-Secondary Schools Squash Tournament on Friday, June 6, at St. Edward’s Secondary School, Kingtom.
The event attracted enthusiastic participation from secondary school pupils across Freetown, who showcased their growing talent in a sport steadily gaining popularity in Sierra Leone.
President of the Sierra Leone Squash Association, Basem Mohamed, expressed gratitude to the young participants and lauded NP (SL) Limited for its consistent support.
“I thank all the children for participating in this secondary school tournament. Let me also thank NP for sponsoring this great occasion. They have always been very supportive of Squash, and I look forward to more support in the future,” he said.
President Basem also extended his appreciation to the National Olympic Committee (NOC) President and the Deputy Minister of Finance 1 for gracing the event.
Representing NP (SL) Limited, Dr. Willette P.R.O. James, Communications Manager, delivered a passionate speech on behalf of the company’s CEO, Saidu Mansaray.
“For the past years, NP has been sponsoring Squash in Sierra Leone. We actually want our pupils to engage in this endeavour. Squash is good for you; it’s one of those games that exercises every part of your body,” she emphasized.
Dr. James highlighted NP’s investment in infrastructure, noting that the company has already built squash courts in Bo and three in Freetown, with plans to expand further.
“We intend to build more squash courts and continue our sponsorship. But please, don’t limit the game to Freetown; we want to see pupils from the provinces involved as well,” she urged. “Next year, we hope the Inter-Secondary School competition will reach the regions, with a grand final in Freetown. Let’s make it even bigger.”
The Communications Manager commended the pupils for their energy and interest, expressing hope that squash would become a “household name” in Sierra Leone.
The president of the National Olympic Committee, Prince Vandi Sualley, echoed similar sentiments and reminded attendees of squash’s inclusion in global sports events.
“Squash is now very much part of the Olympic movement. In 2018, it was featured in the Commonwealth Games in Australia. With three years to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, we need to start the qualification process now.”
President Sualley encouraged young players to focus on the sport with the dream of representing Sierra Leone on the Olympic stage.
“Nothing would impress me more than seeing one of you compete in the Olympics. This game can take you to places you never imagined,” he added, calling for constant engagement between the Squash Association and the NOC.
Also present at the occasion was Madam Kadiatu Alie, Deputy Minister of Finance 1, who joined other dignitaries in witnessing the spirited competition.
Some of the schools that participated include W.A.M Collegiate, Freetown Secondary School for Girls, Lebanese School, Annie Walsh Memorial Secondary School, St. Joseph’s Convent, and Sierra Leone Grammar School.
