With funds from the National Petroleum (NP) Company Ltd and Sierra Fisheries, the Sierra Leone Squash Court Association has recently concluded an Inter Secondary Squash Competition.
The said youth tournament attracted the St. Joseph Convent, Services Secondary School, Juba, Methodist Girls High School, St. Edwards, Prince of Wales and the Sierra Leone Grammar School to battle for supremacy.
General Manager, National Petroleum Sierra Leone Limited, Saidu Mansaray have disclosed that his company stands willing to support not only squash but any other sports that he noted can create the indulgence of people to participate.
The General Manager, who was also chosen with six others by the Sierra Leone Squash Court Association as ambassador for the said sport made this revelation during the grand finals, Inter Secondary School Squash Competition, Grammar School Squash Court, Freetown.
NP’s General Manager expressed appreciation, according him, when they launched the Sierra Leone Grammar School sport squash at the St. Edwards Primary squash court, he did mentioned that we are going to host an Inter School Competition, today we are witnessing the finals, he said.
He lauded the president of the Association together with the young players, predicting that very soon there is a possibility for the association to bring medals from international and regional competitions.
General Manager, Sierra Fisheries, Bassem Karim Mohamed thanked NP for their continuous support not only in the capital but across the country.
He stated that the association is trying very hard for majority of the country’s youthful population to learn how to play the sport.
He pleaded with others to pay greater attention to training noting that the association sponsored the previous and this year’s training programs.
National Olympic Committee –Sierra Leone President Prince Swallay said he deliberately emphasized the commonwealth aspect during his self-introduction.
Justifying the reason for the emphasis, he noted that squash game is a component of the commonwealth.
He said he is disappointed because Sierra Leone does not have any representation for squash in the last commonwealth games in London, unlike the previous, he said squash was represented in Australia and the Gold Coast.
President Swallay assured the association that he will be paying rap attention to the game so that players that are matured for regional and international competitions will be given a try.
He thanked the association’s president for his passion and successes over the years while encouraging him that his efforts will not go in vain but will pay dividend to all and sundry.
Former squash player, Beckley said during the finals, he saw two things, and that is, he noticed a turnout of individuals with passion for the sport.
The other, he continued, was the kind of flexibility exhibited by the young players, which he confessed that during his playing days he had never attained such flexibility, describing the scene as amazing.
He lauded NP for the construction of four squash court across the country.
Alima Conteh, won the under 16 championship for Services Secondary School, Juba, Abigail Koroma won the under 15 championship for the Methodist Girls High School , while Bryan Juwanah of St. Edward was decorated Grand Champion of the 2023 Inter Secondary School Competition.
