The Leadership of the Sierra Leone Water Company (SALWACO), Eastern Sierra Leone on Monday, 20th February, 2023 held a productive meeting at the office of Sierra Leone’s Resident Minister- East, Rtd. Hon. Kes Boyah, updating him on the current water situation in Kenema city.
The SALWACO Regional Manager East, Engineer Sawi informed the Hon. Resident Minister that normal water supply from the Moa treatment plant will soon be restored, stating that major plant components (intake pumps, panels and accessories) are expected in Kenema for restoration in a week’s time.
Engineer Sawi further intimated him that there is water supply from the dams in the Kamboi Hills where residents in some parts of the city access safe water. He also added that there is street-to-street Bowser water supply at an affordable rate of fifty cents per a bata of five gallons, in parts of the city, affected by the current breakdown in the Moa water supply.
Three bowsers are in the city streets of Kenema providing safe water to residents of city.
Mr. Braima Allieu, the Regional Human Resources and Administrative Manager-East also updated the the Hon. Resident Minister about the illegal activities including, but not limited to gold and stone mining that he said are seriously affecting the SALWACO water catchment which has led to the closure of one of the dams.
The Hon. Minister thanked the team and the SALWACO management in general for the good work in his region. He expressed his delight over the three bowsers plying the streets of Kenema, citing that the step was laudable.
He further thanked SALWACO for the swift response in providing pipes and other materials for the rehabilitation of the Gbaneh water supply in Kono District.
In his response, to the illegal activities in the Kamboi hills, the Hon. Minister-East has invited SALWACO to attend an emergency Provincial Security Committee (PROSEC) meeting at 10:00am on Tuesday 21st February, 2023 to find a tangible solution to those activities affecting the water catchment including areas in mining.
