The Sierra Leone national team, Leone Stars’ hope to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2024 in Ivory Coast has ended, even before they played Guinea Bissau.
Sierra Leone played Guinea Bassau in their final match of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Monday, 11th September, 2023, losing by 2 goals to 1 at the Estadio 24 de Setembro in Bissau, Guinea Bissau.
Sierra Leone was in group A with Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Sao Tome Principle for the AFCON qualification.
Nigeria and Guinea-Bissau made it in group A to the 2024 AFCON that will be hosted in Ivory Coast while Sierra Leone didn’t make it because they finished third in the group.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria emerged as the group’s winner with 15 points after playing six matches. Guniea Bissau finished the table with 13 points while Sierra Leone only managed to get 5 points, which was not enough for them to make it to AFCON for the second time in a row.
After Leone Stars hopes for AFCON qualification have faded, it is time for the team to turn their attention to the World Cup Qualification that will start in November 2023.
