The Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) Councillor for Ward 384, Waterloo, Kadiatu Lyne has organized a football tournament to sensitize youths about the dangers of drug abuse, especially ‘kush’ that has become a menace in the country.
The theme for the tournament, held at the Bassa Town Field, Waterloo, was ‘Say no to Drugs/Kush’ and the teams played to clinch the coveted Chief Minister Trophy.
People in the community commended Councillor Kadiatu Lyne for the initiative which they described as a novelty and timely due to the rampant and alarming increase in the use of drugs by especially youths in the community citing government’s declaration of the menace as a National Health Emergency.
The well-attended tournament was officially opened by the President of the Waterloo Union of Disc Jockeys, Ibrahim Bangura who commended Councillor Kadiatu Lyne for the initiative and pledged their loyalty and support to the campaign to end drug and substance abuse in the community.
Statements were also made by other distinguished personalities including the representative of the Waterloo Artists Union and other stakeholders in the community all of whom highlighted the dangers of drug and substance abuse, especially damaging useful, promising and productive youths and called on government and other stakeholders to emulate the sterling example of the councillor to sensitize and eradicate drugs and other harmful substances in the community as well as the importation, processing, distribution, sale and consumption of harmful substances.
They also assured that they would support and collaborate with the police and other law enforcement agencies to eradicate drugs in the community that have destroyed the lives of youths.
