The High Court of Sierra Leone has issued an injunction restraining Jesmed Foday Mami Suma from parading himself as Chairman or Leader of the National Grand Coalition (NGC), effectively barring him from performing any functions in the name of the party.
The injunction, which took immediate effect, prohibits Mr. Suma from making public statements, attending events, or engaging in activities under the banner of the NGC. The ruling comes at a time when the party has been grappling with internal disagreements over its leadership structure.
In an official statement released on Monday, September 22, 2025, the NGC leadership informed members, supporters, and the general public about the court’s decision. The party emphasized that the injunction serves as a legal and binding directive that must be respected by all stakeholders.
“The High Court has granted an injunction restraining Mr. Jesmed Foday Mami Suma from holding himself as Chairman or Leader of the NGC Party,” the statement read. “This order is effective immediately, and Mr. Suma is therefore prohibited from making statements, attending functions, or carrying out any activities in the name of the NGC.”
The party’s leadership also used the statement to call for calm and discipline among members, urging them to avoid distractions and to channel all communications and engagements through the recognized and legitimate leadership.
“The NGC remains united under its lawful structures and committed to upholding the rule of law and democratic governance,” the release continued.
This latest development highlights the ongoing legal battles within the NGC as it seeks to maintain cohesion ahead of future political contests. Observers note that the injunction is a decisive move intended to clarify the party’s leadership and prevent further confusion among its rank and file.
Party insiders suggest that the High Court’s ruling may pave the way for a renewed focus on strengthening internal unity and preparing for broader political engagement. Meanwhile, the public and party supporters are watching closely to see how the ruling will impact the NGC’s standing in Sierra Leone’s political landscape.
For now, the message from the NGC is clear: Jesmed Suma is barred from acting in any capacity as party Chairman or Leader, and all legitimate authority remains vested in the recognized structures sanctioned by the law.
