United Bank for Africa (UBA) Sierra Leone, through its philanthropic arm, the UBA Foundation—has partnered with the Institute for Legal Research and Advocacy for Justice (ILRAJ) to launch the maiden edition of an inter-school debate competition designed to promote education, leadership, and critical thinking among young people across Sierra Leone.
The competition, which brought together students from various secondary schools, served as a platform for young minds to express their ideas, sharpen their analytical skills, and engage in meaningful discussions on national and global issues. The event also reaffirmed UBA’s unwavering commitment to youth empowerment and educational development as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) agenda.
Speaking at the event, Sallieu Sesay, Head of Marketing and Corporate Communications at UBA Sierra Leone, said the initiative aligns with the bank’s four core CSR pillars Education, Empowerment, Environment, and Special Projects. He explained that UBA’s involvement in the debate competition reflects the bank’s dedication to nurturing intellectual growth and fostering leadership among young people.
“Our Group Chairman, Mr. Tony O. Elumelu, strongly believes that the youth are not just the leaders of tomorrow but the change agents of today,” Sesay noted. “That belief continues to guide our investment in initiatives that inspire creativity, innovation, and civic responsibility among young people across Africa.”
Sesay further highlighted UBA’s long-standing commitment to promoting education through several programs under the UBA Foundation. One of the flagship initiatives, he said, is the annual UBA Foundation National Essay Competition, which gives senior secondary school pupils across the country an opportunity to showcase their creativity and academic excellence. Winners of the essay competition receive scholarships and other prizes to support their educational journey, a tradition that continues to impact countless lives.
Recognizing UBA’s consistent efforts in supporting education and youth development, the organizers of the debate presented an award of appreciation to the bank. The award was received by Juliana E. P. Kabba, Internal Communications and Brand Management Officer at UBA Sierra Leone, who expressed gratitude on behalf of the institution. She reaffirmed UBA’s commitment to partnerships that strengthen education, build confidence among students, and inspire them to become responsible leaders in their communities.
At the end of the tightly contested debate, Methodist Girls High School emerged as the overall winner, demonstrating exceptional eloquence, research, and teamwork. St. Joseph’s Secondary School claimed the first runner-up position, while Methodist Boys High School secured the second runner-up spot.
The competition received widespread commendation from education stakeholders, parents, and community members who praised UBA Sierra Leone and ILRAJ for creating a platform that not only promotes academic excellence but also instills discipline and leadership skills in students.
Participants described the event as a life-changing experience, noting that it encouraged them to think critically about social issues and express their ideas with confidence. The judges and facilitators equally lauded the level of preparation and passion displayed by the students throughout the competition.
The collaboration between UBA Sierra Leone and ILRAJ, according to organizers, will continue in the coming years, with plans already underway to expand the program to reach more schools across the country.
The event ended on a high note, with participants expressing optimism that such initiatives will continue to empower the next generation of Sierra Leoneans to think boldly, speak confidently, and lead with purpose, values that UBA continues to champion across Africa.
