The recent suspension of Paramount Chief Haja Mariama G. Kanja IV of Gorama Mende Chiefdom in Kenema District- Sierra Leone, has sent shockwaves throughout the country.
The suspension, which was allegedly carried out unconstitutionally by the Local Government Minister Tamba Lamina, has been widely condemned by the chief’s supporters and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs).
The Paramount Chief, who has been a respected leader in the chiefdom, was suspended due to her handling of the Wonde Secret Society issue.
However, her supporters argue that the suspension is unjustified and politically motivated.
The incident has raised serious concerns about the state of democracy in Sierra Leone. The suspension of the Paramount Chief without due process is a clear violation of the country’s constitution and an affront to the rule of law.
Civil Society Organizations Condemn Suspension
CSOs in Sierra Leone have condemned the suspension of the Paramount Chief, describing it as a “blow to democracy” and a “clear abuse of power.” They have called on the government to immediately reinstate the chief and to take steps to ensure that the rights of all citizens are protected.
“The suspension of the Paramount Chief is a clear example of the government’s disregard for the rule of law and the rights of citizens,” said a spokesperson for one of the civil society organizations. “We demand that the government takes immediate action to address this situation and to ensure that justice is served.”
International Community Urged to Act
The international community is being urged to take action to support the people of Sierra Leone in their quest for democracy and the rule of law. The incident has highlighted the need for greater international scrutiny and support for democratic governance in Sierra Leone. “We call on the international community to condemn the suspension of the Paramount Chief and to support the people of Sierra Leone in their demand for democracy and the rule of law,” said a spokesperson for a civil society organization. “The people of Sierra Leone deserve better, and it is time for the international community to take action to support them.”
