The United Nations Development Programme in Sierra Leone has joined the Ministry of Internal Affairs to officially launch the ministry’s Strategic Plan for 2026 to 2030, marking a significant step toward strengthening governance and security institutions in the country.
The new strategic plan is described as a historic milestone in Sierra Leone’s ongoing efforts to reform and modernize key institutions responsible for maintaining public order, managing immigration, and safeguarding national borders. It is the first comprehensive homegrown roadmap developed by the ministry to guide its operations and priorities over the next five years.
The initiative was developed with technical and financial support from the United Nations Development Programme, reflecting the organization’s continued partnership with the Government of Sierra Leone in promoting effective governance, institutional capacity, and sustainable development.
According to officials, the Strategic Plan provides a clear framework for improving service delivery, strengthening coordination among security agencies, and enhancing the capacity of institutions operating under the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The plan also outlines key priorities aimed at ensuring a more effective system for maintaining public safety while improving the management of immigration services and border protection across the country.
Speaking during the launch, Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme in Sierra Leone, Fredrick Ampiah, emphasized the importance of the new roadmap in guiding reforms within the ministry.
Ampiah noted that the development of the Strategic Plan demonstrates a strong commitment by the government to building more accountable and responsive institutions that can effectively serve the needs of citizens.
He stated that UNDP remains fully committed to providing sustained technical partnership and coordinated support to help ensure the successful implementation of the plan.
According to him, the collaboration between UNDP and the Ministry of Internal Affairs highlights the importance of partnerships in strengthening national institutions and promoting long term stability and development.
Officials at the Ministry of Internal Affairs also described the Strategic Plan as a critical tool that will help guide decision making and policy direction within the ministry over the coming years.
They noted that the roadmap reflects local priorities and realities while aligning with broader national development goals and international best practices in governance and security management.
The launch of the Strategic Plan is expected to support efforts aimed at improving efficiency within the ministry and strengthening the capacity of agencies responsible for maintaining public order and regulating immigration processes.
Stakeholders at the event expressed optimism that the implementation of the plan will contribute to building a more effective and accountable security sector that can respond to emerging challenges while protecting the rights and safety of citizens.
The initiative further underscores Sierra Leone’s ongoing commitment to institutional reform and the strengthening of governance structures that promote stability, transparency, and national development.
