The Vice Chancellor and Principal of the Milton Margai Technical University (MMTU), Professor Philip John Kanu on Saturday 24th January 2026 revealed that the matriculation of 2, 850 students for the 2025/2026 academic year is a defining moment not only in the lives of the new students but in the continued growth of the great institution.
In his address at the Peace and Love Amphitheatre of the MMTU, Goderich campus, he enlightened that as the new students officially become members of the university community built on resilience, innovation, discipline and service to the nation, they have earned a place in an institution that carries a legacy of technical excellence and practical education in Sierra Leone.
According to the Vice Chancellor and Principal, MMTU stands as a beacon of skills development, technological advancement and professional training asserting that their mandate is to produce graduates who are job creators, problem solvers and leaders in industry, entrepreneurship, engineers, educationists and national development officers.
Dr. Kanu furthered that technology is shaping industries, knowledge expanding at unprecedented speed, nations advancing though innovation and skilled human beings which means that education at MMTU would not be passive but demands creativity, critical thinking and hands-on engagement.
He appealed to the new students to pursue academic excellence with dedication and discipline, uphold the values and regulations of the institution, respect lecturers, staff and fellow students, embrace diversity, tolerance and unity, use knowledge not only for personal gain but for national service and not be engaged in cultism or any secret society activities.
The Vice Chancellor and Principal assured all that the university remains committed to expanding its facilities, improve academic standards as well as strengthen industrial partnerships to ensure that it continues to stand tall among institutions of higher learning in Sierra Leone and beyond.
Earlier in his welcome statement, the Deputy Vice Chancellor and Director of Academic Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Alie Jalloh noted that he is delighted to welcome all at the ceremony to share the joy of the new students, congratulated them for gaining admission to the prestigious institution pointing out that matriculation is an important event in the life of any institution worldwide.
He further reminded them that rights go with responsibilities and therefore they must protect the university properties, pay their fees promptly, report criminal activities to the authorities, be disciplined, avoid all forms of sexual harassment and examination malpractices.
Highlights of the well-attended event were the Oath Taking presided over by Mr. Ishmael Kebbay, the Acting Head of Department, Social Studies, formal pronouncement of membership to the university by the Registrar, Mr. Bockarie Sillah, statement of felicitation by Ms. Aminata Bangura, Acting Dean of Campus, Brookfields, sample signing of the University Registrar by Mr. Bassie Bangura, the vote of thanks by a first year student, Mariama Bakarr and the singing of the University Song.
The Alumni Class of 1993-1996 donated chairs, computers and smart boards worth Le143 thousand new Leones to the university.
