The Western Area Rural District Council (WARDC) has issued a commendation to the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) for their significant breakthrough in the investigation surrounding the tragic murder of journalist Samuel Brima Mattia, the former Deputy Station Manager of VOPAD Radio 96.5 FM.
The council’s recognition follows the recent arrest and confession of the principal suspect, Joseph M. Lamin, as well as the swift apprehension of those allegedly hired to carry out the crime.
The case of Samuel Brima Mattia has drawn national attention, highlighting the dangers faced by journalists in Sierra Leone. As news of the breakthrough emerged, WARDC expressed gratitude to the SLP for demonstrating a strong commitment to justice and accountability, emphasizing the need for thorough and timely investigations in crimes against media professionals.
WARDC also condemned all forms of violence, reiterating its dedication to fostering a safe and peaceful environment where the rights and freedoms of every citizen, including journalists, are upheld.
In a public statement, the council highlighted the vital role journalists play in promoting transparency, democracy, and development within communities, underscoring their solidarity with the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) in advocating for justice for Mattia and all media personnel facing threats.
WARDC’s leadership emphasized its commitment to making the Western Area Rural District a secure place for all residents, urging the SLP to continue its diligent work in ensuring that those responsible for Mattia’s murder are brought to justice, appealing for a steadfast approach in holding the perpetrators accountable to the full extent of the law.
The council further called upon all stakeholders, including government agencies, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), and the general public, to collaborate in promoting a culture of peace and respect for the rule of law.
WARDC emphasized that collective efforts are essential in creating a safe environment for journalists and protecting the integrity of the media.
