As Sierra Leone looks ahead to the 2028 general elections, attention is steadily shifting toward the question of who will replace President Julius Maada Bio as leader of the ruling Sierra Leone Peoples Party. With the president constitutionally barred from seeking another term, internal discussions and quiet maneuvering within the SLPP are becoming more open, exposing political divisions and competing ambitions.

One of the most talked about figures in the unfolding debate is Chief Minister Dr David Moinina Sengeh. Supporters associated with his political outlook are often linked to what is described as the Radical Inclusion movement. This group is known for promoting ideas around inclusion, youth participation, innovation, and modern governance. Although Dr Sengeh has not publicly declared an intention to run for the SLPP flagbearer position, his visibility in government and growing popularity, especially among young people, have placed him firmly in the national conversation.

Another development attracting attention is the widespread speculation surrounding the First Lady. Rumors persist that she may be considering a bid for the SLPP flagbearership, with supporters reportedly organizing under the name EMEBA movement. While no official confirmation has been made, the discussion alone has generated strong reactions within political circles. Some see such a move as a continuation of the current administration’s influence, while others believe it raises important questions about internal party balance and fairness.

The list of potential contenders also includes the current Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Timothy Musa Kabba. As a senior government official and long serving party member, Kabba is viewed as a familiar and experienced figure within the SLPP. His name is frequently mentioned as someone who could appeal to both party elders and grassroots supporters. Many believe his involvement would represent continuity and stability within the party.

Also in the spotlight is the head of the Anti-Corruption Commission, Francis Ben Kaifala. He has openly stated his desire to contest the presidency in the future. His strong stance against corruption has earned him national recognition and support among citizens who value accountability and transparency. At the same time, his interest in elective politics has sparked debate about the relationship between public institutions and political ambition.

Together, these emerging figures reflect the growing competition within the ruling party. While political ambition is not unusual, the number of high profile individuals linked to the 2028 race has raised concerns about possible division if the process is not carefully managed. Observers warn that internal rivalry could weaken party unity if disagreements are allowed to deepen.

Party leaders have continued to call for calm, unity, and respect for party structures. They maintain that the SLPP has established mechanisms for choosing leaders and that any succession process should follow democratic principles. However, discussions among party supporters suggest that the race to succeed President Bio has already begun behind the scenes.

As the country moves closer to 2028, the key issue remains unresolved. Who will emerge as the leader capable of uniting the SLPP and convincing voters that the party deserves another term in office. The answer will shape not only the future of the ruling party but also the direction of Sierra Leone’s politics in the years ahead.
