It is both an honor and a privilege to join you today as we commemorate 80 remarkable years of the United Nations 80 years of unity, shared purpose, and tireless pursuit of peace, development, and human rights.
At Africell, we stand proud to be part of this noble journey. For the past 15 years, we have worked hand in hand with the United Nations in Sierra Leone providing high-quality internet connectivity and communication infrastructure to support peacekeeping operations and strengthen humanitarian coordination. This partnership reflects our deep belief that progress is only possible when we are connected—digitally and socially—toward a shared goal.
Our collaboration with UNICEF is another example of this vision in action. Together, we launched a free short code learning passport for students, giving thousands of children access to educational materials at no cost. In a country where access to information remains a challenge for many, this initiative has opened doors to learning and opportunity for young minds across Sierra Leone.
Beyond this, Africell has established an E-Learning Center dedicated to promoting digital literacy. Each year, the center provides free digital skills training to over 1,500 students, empowering them with the tools they need to thrive in a rapidly evolving digital world. This is our contribution to Sustainable Development Goal 4 – Quality Education, and our commitment to ensuring that no young person is left behind in the digital era.
In line with Goal 5 – Gender Equality, Africell is proud to be the first company in Sierra Leone to sign up for the United Nations Women’s Empowerment Principles. Through this pledge, we have implemented programs that promote leadership development, digital skills training, and workplace gender equality. We believe that when women are empowered, communities become stronger, and nations move forward.
As we reflect on Goal 16 – Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, Africell continues to play a vital role in fostering peaceful communication. We currently support over 74 radio stations across the country, helping them develop and broadcast programs that promote peace, social cohesion, and civic participation. These partnerships amplify the voices of communities and strengthen the foundation of peace and democracy in Sierra Leone.
Our efforts also align closely with Goal 9 -Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. Africell continues to drive technological advancement and innovation across Sierra Leone, ensuring that connectivity is not just a service, but a catalyst for development. From expanding broadband coverage to supporting startups and digital entrepreneurs, we are helping to build the infrastructure for a smarter, more inclusive future.
At the heart of all this is our unwavering commitment to our customers ensuring quality, affordability, and value for money in every service we provide. We understand that communication is not a luxury it is a lifeline and we take pride in being a company that connects people, communities, and possibilities.
As the United Nations celebrates 80 years of global impact, Africell reaffirms its commitment to working alongside you to connect people, empower communities, and drive sustainable change. Together, we can continue to build a world that is better connected, better informed, and better prepared for the future.
Thank you.
