The Inspector General of the Sierra Police (IGP-SLP), William Fayia Sellu has last Thursday 2nd 2023 reassured the European Union Elections Observer Mission in the country that the approaching June 24th multitier elections will be peaceful. The Police Chief gave the assurance, during a discussion with the EU Elections Observer Mission at Police headquarter, George Street Freetown. He told the delegation that concerns raised in respect of security and on the preparedness of the force for policing the approaching the elections have already been addressed by the management of the SLP.
IGP pointed out that a nationwide threat assessment was recently conducted by the entire security sector, reiterating that the elections will peaceful and violent will not be tolerated.
IGP Sellu informed the EU delegation about recent capacity building training delivered to personnel in Public Order Management, Elections’ Specifics, the development of a manual on elections security, and human rights. He said the SLP has positioned itself very well alongside other security sector players to police the entire electioneering processes adequately and successfully
Led by the Regional Security Officer, Mario Torre Alvarez, the EU Elections Observer Mission in the country include David Bouanchaud – Programme Manager Elections Observation Missions, Tom Karl Nil – Security Expert, and Kairi Kasmann, Head of Elections Observation.
The Regional Security Officer, Mario Torre Alvarez disclosed that their visit formed part of a follow-up observer mission ahead of the June 24th elections. He said that they are in the country to ascertain police readiness in ensuring that June polls is free, fair, credible, peaceful and transparent.
