Reliable sources emanating from the 2023 parliamentary induction and orientation programme for Members of Parliament elect have it that Dr Abass Chernor Bundu will today Thursday 13 July 2023 be re-elected for the position of the Speaker of the House of the Sixth Parliament of the Second Republic of Sierra Leone for a period of another two years.
Parliamentary sources disclosed that prominent names of MPs of the Fifth Parliament of the Second Republic emerged from the ruling SLPP with keen interest in the office of the Speaker of the House of Parliament.
Sources added that in his wisdom as leader of the ruling SLPP, President Julius Maada Bio is said to have encouraged his party’s MPs to sit and unanimously recommend an individual for the Speaker of the House.
Reports are they the said prominent SLPP MPs were unable to collectively come up with a suitable candidate for the position, smoothly paved the way for re-emerges of the elderly stateman, Abass Chernor Bundu as Speaker of the House of Parliament.
Mixed feelings seem to have gripped the House when news of Dr. Abass Chernor Bundu’s re-emergence to the said office broke.
Many staff and some SLPP MPs hold the view that with his aged experience and exposure in domestic and international politics, makes him the most suitable candidate for the job of the Speaker of the House of Parliament.
Other SLPP MPs yearn for Dr Abass Chernor Bundu to take the back seat and allow others with the required potential to carry such important national service, especially when age is no longer on the side of veteran politician.
However, from the look of things, the incumbent, SLPP retained most of their outspoken senior debaters as MPs including those with leadership responsibilities in the last secession.
Unlike, the main opposition, APC party, most of their senior debaters were unable to make their way to the Sixth Parliament of the Second Republic, which many hold the view will militates against the opposition during critical moments in the life of the Sixth Parliament.
