NDMA cautions the public

The Director of Communications for the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) has taken to his social media handle to caution the public on disaster hotspot area during the rains.

According to Mohamed L Bah Due to ongoing heavy rainfall, the National Disaster Management Agency urges everyone to take immediate precautionary measures to ensure safety and minimize risks associated with flooding, landslides, and other rain-related hazards in the country especially the capital of Freetown.

 

He noted that, some Precautionary Measures to follow are:

  1. Stay Informed:

– Monitor and act on the daily weather forecasts and warnings from the Sierra Leone Meteorological Agency (SLMet)

– Act on National Disaster Management Agency advisories.

 

  1. Avoid Flood-Prone Areas:

– Steer clear of rivers, streams, and low-lying areas that are prone to flooding.

– Do not attempt to cross flooded roads or bridges.

 

  1. Secure Your Property:

– Ensure that gutters, drains, and downspouts are clear of debris to allow for proper water flow.

– Move valuable items to higher ground to prevent water damage.

– Report electricity asset damage in your community to avoid electrocution.

 

  1. Avoid Outdoor Activities:

– Refrain from engaging in outdoor activities, especially near bodies of water or on slopes that may be prone to landslides.

 

  1. Drive with Caution:

– If you must drive, do so carefully. Be aware of the potential for hydroplaning and avoid driving through flooded areas.

– Use headlights and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.

 

  1. Report Emergencies:

– In case of emergencies, contact the NDMA on 1199 using Africell for free, +23278388946 / +23278096975 / +23278303293

 

He ended by saying, following these precautions; they could help ensure the safety and well-being of the communities during this period of heavy rainfall.
