On September 25, 2024, the Group Chairman of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) and Founder of The Tony Elumelu Foundation, Mr. Tony Elumelu, CFR, hosted an exclusive cocktail reception in New York on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). This significant event celebrated two major milestones: the 75th anniversary of UBA Group and the 40th anniversary of UBA America.

The reception attracted an impressive array of global dignitaries, including President Julius Maada Bio and First Lady Fatima Bio of Sierra Leone, along with other heads of state such as His Excellency Carlos Vila Nova of São Tomé and Príncipe, His Excellency Joseph Boakai of Liberia, His Excellency Brice Nguema of Gabon, and His Excellency Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana. Notable attendees also included Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, business magnate Aliko Dangote, and US Senator Chris Coons.

Themed “Celebrating Culture, Collaboration, and Innovation,” the event served as a platform for leaders from various sectors to engage in meaningful discussions about Africa’s future. Guests were treated to a vibrant showcase of African culture, featuring traditional delicacies and a performance by renowned artist Davido.

Mr. Elumelu emphasized UBA’s commitment to fostering economic growth in Africa, youth employment, and equitable energy transition. He highlighted the bank’s role in facilitating trade between Africa and global markets, stating that empowering young entrepreneurs is crucial for both Africa and the Caribbean.

Key Discussions

During the event, Mr. Elumelu met with Jamaica’s Prime Minister to discuss potential partnerships aimed at enhancing collaboration between Africa and the Caribbean. He also participated in discussions on climate change and sustainable development alongside former US President Bill Clinton at the Clinton Global Initiative.

The UBA Group’s involvement in UNGA further underscored its dedication to engaging with global leaders on critical issues affecting Africa, including economic empowerment and sustainable energy solutions.
