As President of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), I feel compelled to add my voice to the growing calls for Members of Parliament to VOTE AGAINST the removal of The Auditor General, Lara Taylor-Pearce.
Lara Taylor-Pearce has consistently demonstrated unwavering integrity, diligence, and commitment to duty throughout her tenure. Her office has been instrumental in safeguarding public funds, exposing instances of financial mismanagement, and recommending reforms to ensure accountability in public offices. These efforts have not only strengthened democracy but have also provided the media with critical tools to hold public officials accountable.
The Auditor General’s annual reports have been a cornerstone of public interest journalism in Sierra Leone, empowering citizens with information and fostering a culture of transparency. To punish her for doing her job—ensuring proper oversight of public resources—is a dangerous precedent that threatens the very foundations of good governance and accountability in our nation.
The decision before Parliament today is not just about one individual (and her deputy)—it is about the future of accountability and the public’s trust in our institutions. Removing Lara Taylor-Pearce risks eroding this trust, weakening institutional checks and balances, and discouraging others who strive to uphold transparency in their service to Sierra Leone.
I appeal to Members of Parliament to act in the best interest of our country and vote against the removal of the Auditor General. Let us protect the independence of this critical office and the principles of integrity and accountability it represents.
